A Prayer for Grief
Grief does not follow a schedule, and it does not need to be tidied up before it is brought to God. The Psalms are full of tears that were never edited out. Whatever you have lost, you do not have to carry it gracefully. You just do not have to carry it alone.
God, it hurts. I am not going to dress that up with religious words. You know what I lost, and you know what it took with it.
You said you stay close to the brokenhearted. I need that to be true tonight. Not as a verse on a card, but as your actual presence in this actual room.
I am not asking you to rush me through this. Even Jesus wept, and he knew how the story ended.
Just stay. Collect these tears. And when I cannot pray anything else, let this be enough: I am still here, and so are you. Amen.

Why this matters
The shortest verse in scripture is Jesus wept, and he wept at a funeral. Grief prayed honestly is not weak faith. It is faith refusing to leave the room. Lament has always been part of the language of belief, and God has never once turned it away.
Common questions
How do I pray when I am grieving and have no words?
Wordless prayer still counts. Sitting in God's presence, crying, even breathing slowly with a single phrase like Lord, have mercy is prayer. Romans 8:26 says the Spirit intercedes when we do not know what to say.
Is it okay to be angry at God while grieving?
The Psalms include anger, accusation and confusion, all addressed directly to God, all kept in scripture on purpose. God can hold your anger. Bring it to him rather than letting it push you away from him.
